The BDPA IT Corps began with a response to a challenge given to BDPA by His Excellency, the Ambassador for Ethiopia, Mr. Samuel Assefa, as part of his keynote speech to a dinner audience at the BDPA Annual National Conference, in Washington, D.C. in August of 2007. Mr. Norman R. Mays a long time BDPA member, responded to the challenge by beginning to draft a proposal for the creation of such a corps. Shortly thereafter, he solicited the support and participation of Dr. Ademola (Demo) Solaru. Together they created what is today, the BDPA IT Corps.

Helping Seniors "Bit" by "Byte"

Carrie Stewart received a laptop computer and speakers from her daughter and a printer from her son, but felt no closer to bridging the digital divide than before receiving the equipment.

She unboxed what she described as "all these plugs and connectors and CD's and wires," and felt intimidated and frustrated. As part of the BDPA Cleveland's commitment to Black Family Technology Awareness Week (BFTAW), a BDPA volunteer patiently worked through the necessary steps of making Carrie's system operable, and calming her nerves. Carrie is now connected and "hooked up" and a part of the technology revolution, thanks to BDPA Cleveland.
